Here’s a list of
Marathi movies inspired from true life stories. I thoroughly enjoyed watching
them, hope you like them too.
1. HARISHCHANDRACHI FACTORY:
Based
on the life of the Father of Indian Cinema, Dadasaheb Phalke, set in 1913 the
film marks the beginning of one of the world’s greatest film industry. After
parting ways with his business partner, Phalke pursues his dream of making an
Indian motion picture based on the life of Raja Harishchandra. What skills will
he have to develop to make a movie? In an era when superstitions ruled &
a place where people equated movies to black magic, what difficulties would he have to
face? It surely is a great ensemble of impeccable performances & a wonderful script.
2. 22
JUNE 1897:
British
officer C. W. Rand of the ICS, who was appointed to take charge of the plague
control measures had successfully contained the epidemic; but his methods
of evacuation, of sterilizing the dwellings and burning the contaminated
articles evoked tremendous hatred & in turn resulted in his assassination
by the Chapekar brothers – Damodar Hari,
Vasudev Hari and Balkrishna Hari and Mahadeo Vinayak Ranade & Khando Vishnu
Sathe on 22 June 1897. Beautiful cinematography, good script backed with power
packed performances makes it a MUST WATCH!
3. MEE
SINDHUTAI SAPKAL:
When most children of her
age go to school, Chindhi shoulders the responsibility of grazing the cattle.
Her dreams of being educated are shattered when she is married off at the age
of 12, only to return home within a year, as a widow! Soon, she is married off
to a middle-aged man! The second husband is illiterate, ego issues arise that
result into a ban on chindhi’s reading- be it bits of newspaper or her nephew’s
textbooks!
Few years later she
is kicked out of her husband’s house on the pretext of a false accusation, that
she is having an illicit affair & is pregnant out of the wedlock! despite being homeless, she manages to build an orphanage! how?
Based on “Me vanvasi”, by Sindhutai Sapkal,
the film is a divinely-hewed heart-wrenching narration on celluloid elaborated by extraordinary
performances, power packed dialogues, exceptional cinematography & amazing
direction!
4. ATYACHAAR:
In
1982, the National Film Development Board produced a film Atyachar,
which was based on Daya Pawar’s autobiography Baluta. The book and the film tell the
story of the battle of a young man, from the backward Mahar community; to
escape the pit of darkness that society confines him to. It effortlessly portrays
the struggle of the protagonist with both the society & with himself. It shows
in great depth, the shallowness of the society! With impeccable acting &
story line the film is about a young man trapped in a society full of
contradictions & superstitions.
5. LALBAUG PAREL:
Loosely based on the
lives of mill-workers in Mumbai, where due to redevelopment the Land became the
currency of growth & thus began the systematic extinction of mills. In a
matter of just a few years, hundreds of thousands of workers lost their means
of livelihood. With no jobs, no income & no other employable skills how
would these workers survive? How will these workers get justice when they are
fighting against big business men & powerful politicians? Will their Union
leader be able to lead them to a better living?
Suggestions are welcome. Merry movie viewing!
